Italy: Moroccan woman in parliament

A female Moroccan immigrant won a seat in the Italian Parliament, following the victory of the centre-right coalition, led by Silvio Berlusconi in the Italian elections.

Italy's Association of Moroccan Women president, Souad Sbaï, was presented under the banner of the Party of the National Union, led by former Foreign Minister Gianfranco Fini, an ally of the coalition.

Known for her actions to promote conditions of immigrant women in Italy, Souad Sbaï, who arrived in this country in the 80s, chaired the Confederation of Moroccans in Italy before resigning to devote herself to the electoral campaign.

Doctor of Comparative Law and a graduate in philosophy following university studies in Rome, she is also a member of religious advisory committee initiated by the Italian Interior Minister of the former Berlusconi government.

Burlosconi, a 71-year-old media magnate, won a comfortable majority in the parliament's two chambers. He is due to ensure the Prime Minister's duties for a third tenure since 1994. The politician had twice been Prime Minister, from May 1994 to January 1995 and from April 2005 to May 2006.

His conservative PDL party won 47.3% of the votes against his center-left rival Walter Veltroni, who earned 38 %.
