Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Bjarne Håkon Hanssen will demand that a certain income level be met before spouses from outside Europe can be brought to Norway. Persons wishing to have spouses from outside the European Economic Area join them in Norway must be able to document earnings of NOK 200,000 (USD 33,500) for at least one year. The proviso is Hanssen's proposal as part of a new Immigration Act. Newspaper Dagbladet reports that one must also substantiate the probability of maintaining this earning level in the future. Income can not include relief benefits. The idea of minimum income replaces the original idea of a minimum age of 21 for spouses seeking reunification with mates living abroad. Hanssen said that these ideas are designed to hinder forced marriages and strengthen integration.
